Learn More About Apple IPad And Kindle DX
After iPad arrived on April – I know that many of you guys will be asking, “Why would anyone compare the KindleDX to the iPad?” The truth is, this comparison came out when I was review a Kindle e-book reader. It was also around the same time when the iPad was revealed to the public.
After taking one glace at the Apple iPad, I thought that it looks just like an e-book reader! After discovering that the iPad’s price starts from $499, I began to seriously consider my purchase of the Kindle DX or any other e-book reader for that matter (by the way I would just like to say that the 6-inch Kindle is great and all, but it is just a little too small for me). The Kindle DX is retailing price at $489 per device when iPad arrived.
Both the Kindle DX Wireless and Apple iPad have a 9.7-inch display screen but there is where the similarities end. The iPad screen is a full-colored touch screen while the one of the DX is not. The display on the DX makes use of the electronic-ink technology that simulates the looks of concrete article.
At early glance it may seem that there is no way that the DX can alikeness to the new Apple product. The iPad can be used to not only see e-books (e-magazines, publisher, etc) in full colour, but also to seek the web, hear to music and make access to all the applications on the Apple Apps store. The Kindle DX on the added hand seems to be a plain-old e-book reader.
If you are search for an e-book reader that can do a full lot of other things, it is of no question that the Apple iPad will kind an superior buy. On the other hand, if you are a hardcore reader and would like to have an e-book reader specifically dedicated to reading books or magazines, the Amazon Kindle DX would be the perfect device for that purpose. Tho’ I personally have not had the hazard to use the iPad yet, I highly pretend that it will be many comfortable to see on the Kindle for prolonged periods of period thanks to the nature of its screen. The Kindle Reader is also much more ‘portable’ with its very long battery life (up to 2 weeks on one charge).
With the comer of the iPad in April, many tech pundits wrote off Amazon’s similarly sized–and similarly priced–Kindle DX as a non-viable set. But almost 3 months after Apple launched its tablet, Amazon is making efforts to resuscitate the DX with a cost cut to $379, a new graphite finish, and covering that offers higher contrast and darker fonts. It’s open for preorder now and ships July 7. So, what are you waiting for..
Learn more about Kindle DX
Kindle DX comes with the larger screen is a definite plus. I use the large identify size on my Kindle 2, and at this type size I get far more text per page on the DX. This makes the whole reading experience more book-like and should be a boon to people who buy large-print books. The screen is also sharper and crisper than my Kindle 2 in a side-by-side comparison: the text is darker, and the contrast is much better, making for better visibility overall.
On a side note, the larger screen also makes it possible to read poetry on the kindle reader, even at large type sizes. On earlier Kindles, the smaller screen cut off lines, so that you would lose the sense of when the poet ended the line. On the DX, you can see the whole line exactly as the poet meant it, with the cut-off in the right spot.
The PDF reader works as advertised, and is extremely convenient. PDF documents appear on the DX exactly as they do on a computer screen. Moreover, you can proceed and deliver your documents direct to the device using the USB line (or use the for-a-fee email if you perfectly must.) The only downside: at least for the documents that I’ve used so far, I cannot adjust the type size as I can with native Kindle documents.
The screen rotation also works as advertised: it operates as a mild zoom on both graphics and text and offsets slightly the downside of not being able to adjust the typesize on PDF documents. One good figure touch: the four-way guidance stick introduced on the Kindle 2 is rotation-sensitive, and leave relocation as expected relative to the display movement.
And more of the device area is devoted to the display, while the white plastic border around the screen seems to acquire shrunk, both in overall and compared to the balance of screen to plastic on the Kindle 2. I like this (but see below about the keyboard).
I like the increase in storage space, and don’t mind the lack of an external storage card. I can see several people having pain with this, but only those folks who either moldiness regularly hold around PDF documents totalling much than 3.5 GB of space or must have nearly 3500 books regularly at their fingertips. I fall in neither category.
With Kindle DX has long battery lifetime, you can read on a single charge for up to 7 days with wireless on. Turn wireless off and read for up to 2 weeks. Battery period will vary based on wireless usage, specified as shopping the Kindle Store and downloading content. In low-coverage areas or in EDGE/GPRS-only coverage, kindle dx wireless usage will consume battery power more quickly.

Specialise And Succeed – The Amazon Kindle Reader
Currently there’s a lot of interest in electronic devices which fulfil various different functions. Phones which have cameras, can browse the internet, play mp3 music files and even act as satellite navigation systems are splendid examples of these “fusion” devices.
The iPod may well be the best example of all. It’s a music player, phone, web browser and has a huge variety of “Apps” which can range from games to hotel recommendations. It even has a Kindle app which allows users to read Kindle books on their iPod.
The Kindle reader itself could be considered to be a multi-functional device. Over and above its primary function as an e-book reader, it can be used as a web browser. Admittedly, the functionality is somewhat limited, primarily due to its display which is monochrome and not suited to displaying video due to a relatively slow refresh rate.
On the other hand, it is the Kindle’s e-ink technology display which makes it so much more pleasant to read on than either the iPod or a computer screen. As a result of the fact that the display is not back-lit, it generates considerably less eye strain in use when compared to a standard LCD type of monitor.
A further advantage of e-ink technology displays is the fact that they only require power when the screen is being rewritten. The significance of this is that e-book readers can go for lengthy periods on a single battery charge. It’s the perfect scenario for a battery operated portable item. Roughly speaking, e-book readers can perform several thousand “page turns” inbetween charges. For an average reader, that will represent something between four and six weeks of use.
So, the very thing that makes e-book readers such ideal devices to reading books on – the e-Ink display – is placing a limitation on their ability to perform other tasks, such as video display or surfing the web. It can only be a matter of time until color e-Ink technology displays begin to appear, and with a much faster refresh rate. Devices such as the Kindle reader will then become better internet browsers and media players.
In the meantime, based upon the fact that e-book readers are very much the hot gadget of the moment, it does look as if there is still a place for devices which do one job only. Just so long as, like the Amazon Kindle, they do that one job very well.
2010 – Could It Be The Year Of The Ebook Reader?
2009 was, even by their own high standards, a very successful year for Amazon. A good deal of the credit for that must go to the Kindle ebook reader family. The Kindle 2.0 and its larger sibling, the DX, have been a huge success for Amazon. The Kindle has quickly become Amazon’s top selling product.
The Kindle currently has a 60% share of the U.S. e-book reader market. The Kindle 2.0 recently launched internationally. Even if Amazon don’t achieve the same high level of success internationally – although it’s difficult to see why they wouldn’t – the increased size of the market is going to help Amazon to even better results in 2010.
There are some who maintain that a lot of the Kindle’s success up to now has been a result of a lack of genuine competition. Whilst there may be some truth in the assertion that there weren’t many e-book readers around to compete directly with the Kindle, it would probably be nearer the truth say that the Kindle’s success was primarily thanks to the fact that it was an innovative, market changing product.
There are certainly enough alternative readers available today – or due for release in the near future. The long list of competitors which either have their own readers on the market or scheduled for imminent release is a clear indication of the level of growth which can be anticipated in the e-book reader market. Despite the fact that the market is new and is still in development, it has received support from a number of different sources – including the world of academic publishing and various political bodies. Rapid growth looks inevitable.
Another good indicator of the expected level of growth in this sector is the high volume of third party goods available to protect, customise and accessorise ebook readers. At the moment most of these items are aimed at Amazon Kindle users. If you want a Kindle cover, Kindle reading light or a spare charger then there are plenty of independent manufacturers ready and willing to meet your needs. The selection of accessories available for new readers, such as the Sony Daily Edition reader and Barnes and Noble’s Nook will begin to expand as their popularity rises.
Just as 2009 was a good year for Amazon, we can expect 2010 to see ebook readers in general become more and more popular. Amazon’s dominance will be challenged and increased competition will drive prices lower – perhaps to the point where such readers enter the mainstream consumer electronics arena.
Market analysts predict that a price of around $ 150 is what is required for this to happen. With the high level of competition in the market, it’s not outwith the realms of possibility that this price level may be reached in the course of 2010.

At Last – Real Competition For The Amazon Kindle
It’s been a long time coming – and strictly speaking it’s not quite here yet – but it looks as if the Amazon Kindle reader is about to get some serious competition. Sony has confirmed the launch the “Daily Edition” – its latest e-book reader – and it looks as if it will provide tough competition the Amazon Kindle.
Sony say it will be on sale before the end of the year – which probably means it will be out in time for the Christmas gift giving season. The price will be 9. That’s 0 more than a Kindle 2 and less than a Kindle DX.
The price isn’t the only thing that’s been positioned between the Kindle 2 and the DX. Readers can view a similar number of lines of text to a paperback book on the seven inch wide screen. The device trumps both of the Kindles by incorporating touch screen technology.
Wireless connectivity is provided – but only to the Sony bookstore. This will be provided by AT&T which may make it easier for Sony to launch the reader in Europe (no date for this has been announced as yet). Amazon has had little luck to date in obtaining similar European connectivity to their Sprint 3G “Whispernet” system used in the US.
It really looks as if Sony has a very strong offering here. On the face of it, the Daily Edition looks to be technically superior to the Kindle in certain areas. Of course, it’s not just the technical functionality of the actual reader devices that need to be considered. Amazon’s huge, and ever increasing, library of titles on offer is a big selling point for them. However, Sony have a tie-up with Google which lets their users access Google’s public domain library and the Daily Edition reader will also allow users to access their local library’s collection of e-books.
In the near future there are plenty of other competitors who are planning to launch new readers – Apple for example. The competition in the relatively young e-book reader marketplace looks to be growing daily. At the end of the day, increased competition can only be good news for consumers as prices of both the readers and the e-books for them will trend downwards.
